Lessons with Me
I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of students in my over ten years of teaching experience. I believe in a multi-faceted approach to singing instruction that makes for significant, meaningful progress.
I believe our instruments carry much power, and that my job as your instructor is to guide you toward confidence and more fluid creative expression. I prioritize vocal technique and vocal health while guiding development of organic creativity and harmony between mind and body.
I have been hired to teach at multiple music studios and performing arts institutions including Brooklyn Music School, Expressions Music Academy, the University Musical Society, Dance Dynamics, and Detroit’s Third Wave Music Shop. I’m currently working to expand my private home studio.

Testimonials
“For three years, Alex Koi was an exceptional addition to the Expressions faculty and I would highly recommend her teaching services to anyone. Alex is reliable, organized, and incredibly thoughtful, always finding ways to tailor lessons to the individual needs and interests of the student. Throughout her time at Expressions, Alex retained the overwhelming majority of her students, which not only speaks to her talents as an instructor and musician, but also demonstrates the strong bonds she was able to forge with her students. Alex’s students were always referring her to their friends and family members, and Alex was able to build a large roster of students thanks to fantastic word of mouth. Additionally, Alex is a very talented performer and is able to provide students with a wide-ranging and thorough music education, easily moving between genres and topics. Finally, Alex is an experienced and sought after performer, and is able to share the knowledge and lessons she has picked up over the years with all of her students. Signing up for music lessons with Alex is an opportunity no one should miss!””
“Alex is incredibly knowledgeable and has a very unique ability to tailor her teaching to the specific person and their vocal type. Understanding the voice and the muscles to enact is difficult to describe, and Alex teaches in a way that makes any vocalist– beginner or experienced feel like they can feel and grasp the instrument they can’t see. Not to mention, she has an amazing voice herself.””
“Taking lessons with Alex during the Fall [2020] invigorated my musical practice during this time of isolation. She is patient and thoughtful and always musical in her approach—we spent our lessons working with our breath, learning how our bodies produce sound, increasing resonance in different registers, and shaping words & vowels. She is super knowledgeable and tailors each lesson so that it’s engaging and fun. If you’re an instrumentalist and curious about singing, I highly recommend taking lessons with Alex!”
“Alex is a fantastic teacher. She gave me the space to learn at the pace I needed, while offering gentle discipline to push me to try new things that may have been uncomfortable at first but ultimately led to true musical growth. Our lessons put me more in touch with the processes of my own body, and ultimately moved my music making from an externalized to a grounded and internalized place.”
“Working with Alex over these past few months has given me the space to find my most authentic voice. She creates a safe, encouraging space where all types of noise and sound are welcomed. My musical vocabulary has opened up and I feel like I am on the way to discovering what my voice means to me.”
“Alex is such a joy to work with! Under her guidance, I was able to fine tune my ear, strengthen my range, & deepen my voice-body connection—all this in only 4 lessons. She knows how to challenge you without strain or stress. Even over Zoom, her presence is light, focused, & radiating with encouragement. I will indeed be working with her more in the future.”

Learning Virtually
Should you be interested in remote lessons…
Learning to sing virtually may seem to present a unique set of challenges, but you’d be surprised. With the correct preparation, I have found it actually opens new doors for expansive learning.
The most effective setup will include all of these items, but please don’t purchase any new items until we’ve discussed possibilities. There may be alternatives depending on your budget.
Strong WIFI connection
ZOOM account
Laptop or Computer
External Playback device (That isn’t the computer you will run Zoom from). This can be a Tablet or iPhone which will be used to play accompaniment tracks. I will share MP3s with you to upload to this device.
External microphone. This could be as simple as earbuds with an attached mic or a USB desktop mic . While not required, if you already use an interface with headphones and something like an SM58 microphone, that will work great as well.
External speaker (if external playback device does not have loud speaker) (example)
A quiet place. Ideally somewhere with enough room to stand, stretch and move around freely.
Lastly, I have personally loved teaching over ZOOM. It has been an opportunity to work with students from places across the country including Baltimore, Detroit, Ann Arbor, LA, Pittsburgh and more. I encourage students anywhere in the US and internationally to sign up for voice lessons.
Repertoire includes music from all genres - pop, rock, musical theatre, jazz, folk, and more. I like to work on material that my students are excited about and introduce them to new things.
For students interested in creating original music, I teach foundations of recording in various DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations).
Practicing odd meters from Music Theory Through Improvisation: A New Approach to Musicianship Training by Ed Sarath. Don’t worry if this may look too challenging - we will begin learning at the level with which you are comfortable.
