Recognized and respected as a powerhouse vocalist in multiple musical genres, Alex Koi presents to audiences her Jazz Project, sharing her foundational love for the jazz standard songbook. Noted for her improvisational ability, four octave vocal range, and sophisticated performance style, Koi emotes musical nuance with poise, beauty, and intrigue. With powerful phrasing and a vocal timbre reminiscent of a vintage age, the Jazz Project both entertains and chills audiences with its artistic intention.
Having an extensive repertoire of jazz, blues, bossa and contemporary, Koi has performed with some of Detroit's finest emerging and established musicians including Ian Finkelstein, Marcus Elliott, Michael Malis, Stephen Boegelhold, Ben Rolston, and more. Previously a student of music at The University of Michigan, Koi studied jazz, voice, and composition with acclaimed faculty Robert Hurst, Ellen Rowe, Marion Hayden, Andrew Bishop, Ed Sarath, and Caroline Helton.
In 2016, she was invited to join Detroit-based musical arts collective Polyfold, all of whose members she calls friends and collaborators. She has performed at the Carr Center, The Detroit Institute of Arts, the Power Center for Performing Arts, Hill Auditorium, the London Chop House, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, The New School, and Shapeshifter Lab.
